On Thursday September 19th The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra and Stuart Mcdonald will be presenting a special night of music at The Museum of Glass in Tacoma WA.

The first set will feature The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra. I'll be joined by Osama Afifi on bass and Stefan Schatz on drums. We'll also be featuring Stuart Mcdonald on saxophone.

The second set will feature Stuart Mcdonald + the MB3

Saxophonist Stuart MacDonald joins forces with the MB3, comprised of
three up-and-coming talents of the Seattle Jazz scene: Martin Budde,
guitar, Dylan Hayes, piano, and drummer Xavier Lecouturier are each
outstanding composers and improvisers in their own right. For this
special performance, they team up with celebrated saxophonist Stuart
MacDonald for a set of original music and fresh arrangements of jazz
classics.

About our guest artist:

Saxophonist and singer Stuart MacDonald is a Seattle native, with more than 25 years of experience as a performer, bandleader, and educator. Stuart has performed with a wide array of artists and groups, including: Bill Frisell, The Seattle Symphony, SRJO, Cuong Vu, Clinton Fearon, Andrew Cyrille, Ingrid Jensen, Patti LaBelle, Josh Groban, Aaron Parks, Frankie Valli, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Seth MacFarlane, and many others.

At 23, Mordy received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston and immigrated to the United States. He graduated in 1987 with full honours and received the prestigious Jim Hall award for outstanding musicianship.

Mordy Ferber has performed and recorded with artists including Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, Miroslav Vitous, Jeff Berlin, Danny Gottlieb, Bob Moses, Richie Beirach, Richard Bona, George Garzone, Will Lee, Larry Coryell, Adam Nussbaum and Billy Hart. He has recorded 3 albums as a leader on the Enja, Half Note and CBS Europe Record labels.

Mordy has twenty-six years of teaching experience at such prestigious institutions as New York University, Berklee College of Music in Boston, the New School University, American Institute for Guitar and the Sam Ash Institute in New York City. He is highly sought after for his private instruction and has taught master classes in improvisation technique, harmony and composition all over the world.
Mordy is regularly commissioned to write music for television and film and his work has been used widely in shows such as the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Jack Ass, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Guilty on HBO, Fresh Prince, Bay Watch, Felicity, Chris Rock Special on HBO, Everybody Loves Raymond, Veronica’s Closet, the VH1 Fashion Award Show, the Grammy Awards promo, and on many other prime time television shows and movies worldwide.

A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Tracy Knoop is one of the best-known jazz artists and teachers in the region. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, he joined the world-famous Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and toured with them for ten years. Tracy has performed with such greats as Louis Bellson, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters, Buddy Rich, and Mel Torme. He also has performed with the Temptations, Four Tops, and the Seattle Symphony. He can be heard on commercial recordings by the Charlie May All-Star Big Band, Keith Henson, Octet, Pony Boy All-Star Big Band, and the Tracy Knoop Quartet. He continues to perform and teach extensively throughout the Northwest and across the country.

Bassist, Composer, Producer, Nate Omdal has establishing himself as one of the Northwest’s most dependable producers and his work can be heard all over the city of Seattle. Nate has provided arrangements or worked as musical director for The Seattle International Film Festival, million dollar fundraisers, (Celebrate Swedish 2014) prestigious winery events, (Chateau St. Michelle Riesling Roundup) as well as the Seattle Art Museum and Bumbershoot. In 2010, Omdal began a partnership with MC/Producer Spekulation. Their work has received critical praise, their music being described as reaching “highbrow requirements, leveraging elegance and elevation on the boards.” (Dave Segal, The Stranger). In the beginning of 2016, Nate began an apprenticeship with Hollywood Composer Ron Jones (Family Guy, Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Nate continues to earn a reputation as a leading composer/arranger in the Seattle music community.

Omdal has been honored to have worked with such artists as LeRoy Bell, (X-Factor) Stephanie Ann Johnson (The Voice) NPR’s RadioLab, Tiler Peck (Principal Ballerina, New York City Ballet) Matthew Rushing, (Rehearsal Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre) Animation Dancer Marquese “Nonstop” Scott, GRAMMY Award Winning Artists Josh Rawlings and Jeremy Jones, Latin Grammy Nominee Jovino Santos-Neto. Born in Austin, TX, Jerome Smith has been a professional musician for
almost 20 years. Playing music has taken him all over the world
including Los Angeles for the Grammy's; Orlando for Disney
World show bands, Beijing and Shanghai, China on orchestra tours,
United Kingdom and South America on Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines; teaching at the International School of Moscow, Russia, just to name a few. 2019 marks the 60th anniversary between Tacoma and it's sister city Kitakyushu in Japan.

On Tuesday July 23rd, The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra will be hosting a special concert at The Tacoma School of the Arts Theater in Tacoma WA.

The concert will feature jazz artists and students from both Tacoma and Kitakyushu.

Artists featured will include:

As a Jazz pianist, Danny Kolke is known for his aggressive technique, passionate voicings and hard swinging blues and gospel feel. As Jim Wilke (KNKX / Jazz After Hours Public Radio International) has said, “if you like trio’s like those of Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris, you are going to like this trio.” Danny plays piano with his trio every Sunday at the Firehouse in North Bend and he has three CD’s on the Pony Boy Records label. His most recent CD, “Danny Kolke Trio +One Featuring Pete Christlieb”, add’s Pete’s amazing legendary Tenor sound to the dynamic group. It’s a must have to any Jazz fan’s collection. Multifaceted American jazz pianist-composer Emmet Cohen is one of the most highly pivotal figures in music today, presenting jazz lectures through the YoungArts Foundation and Lincoln Center’s “Jazz for Young People” program. He has appeared in the Monterey, Newport, North Sea, Bern, and Edinburgh jazz festivals. A vibrant solo and trio performer, Cohen was a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and the prestigious American Pianists Association's Cole Porter Fellowship in 2011 and 2015. Cohen is also a member of Christian McBride's trio "Tip City," the "Herlin Riley Quartet," and the "Ali Jackson Trio," and serves as pianist and music director for jazz vocalist and television personality Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black).

This Harlem-based piano phenomenon will be in Tacoma with his all-star trio featuring Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s bassist, Russell Hall, and drummer Kyle Poole, who recently toured with Cecile McLorin Salvant. The trio is known for its range, uplifting dynamism, and treating audiences to a master class in stylistic juxtapositions. Their melding of stride, blues, church, swing, bebop, free, and contemporary styles results in the innovative sound of jazz’s future.

Saxophonist Bill Ramsay is a Northwest treasure who's been both leader and sideman in dozens of bands, not only in this region but also internationally. He recently played concerts in Brazil with former Count Basie Band members. He's played with many of the best known bands ever - Basie, Ellington, Goodman, Les Brown, Quincy Jones, Grover Mitchell, Maynard Ferguson and others. He was a regular at Red Kelly's in both Tumwater and Tacoma, is co-leader of the Ramsay-Kleeb Band, a founding member of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, and in the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame.

John Hansen is regarded as one of the most in-demand jazz pianists in the Northwest. A studied and musical ensemble player with a strong melodic vocabulary, John has always been recognizable for a unique personal voice.

His performance history includes such venues as NYC's Birdland, The Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, DC's John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, Seattle's Jazz Alley and Tula's, and international festivals and tours in France, Japan, Korea, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia and Central America. Pack a blanket, your own cooler, and head to the Key Peninsula for a Sunday afternoon of Live Jazz Music. Enjoy 220 feet of private waterfront just across the way from Penrose State Park. Beach house, grounds, and kayaks available for shared use. 1pm-4pm.

Parking is onsite and there is over 1.3 acres to enjoy the concert with your own family or group of friends!

All proceeds from this event benefit our yearly programming which includes educational workshops, masterclasses, scholarships, performances, and cultural exchanges.

Tim Fitzgerald is a Chicago based guitarist and bandleader. He is also author of the book 625 Alive: the Wes Montgomery BBC Concert Transcribed, which has been hailed as the "Ultimate Study of Wes Montgomery's music" (Just Jazz Guitar Magazine) and “One of the 50 greatest guitar books of all time” (The 50 Greatest Guitar Books). He has written columns for Downbeat Magazine, Just Jazz Guitar Magazine and Chicago Jazz Magazine and performed clinics at the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival.
Tim has performed at venues from Chicago's Green Mill to the Luxor in Las Vegas, from NYC to Homer, AK. TV and film musical appearances include PBS's Art Beat, the Sony film "The Myth of Fingerprints" and the animated film "Hoodwinked, Too." The many luminaries he has performed with include Von Freeman, Wycliffe Gordon, Ron Perrillo, and Denis Charles.

Osama Afifi has been a professional bassist since 1983. The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra Featuring Jeff Busch

The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra will be performing at The Swiss Restaurant & Pub in Tacoma WA on Sunday June 24th. I'll be joined by Greg Feingold on bass and we'll be featuring guest artist Jeff Busch on drums. We'll also be joined by students from our Tuesday night class, The Weekly Jazz Workshop ,which is held at Ted Brown Music. 5pm, all ages welcome, no cover charge.

More information about Jeff:

Jeff Busch is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups--as well as calypso, samba, and Cuban jazz ensembles. Between 1988-96, Jeff studied fine art, and music in Leeds, England. He studied percussion and drum set with Dave Hassel, calypso with steel drum master Dudley Nesbitt, and later Brazilian percussion with Jesse Bannister. In Leeds he first worked as a percussion accompanist for dancers at the Northern Contemporary Dance School; The Phoenix Dance Company and The Northern Ballet. Now based in Seattle, Jeff continues this work for the Cornish College of the Arts, and for Janelle Keane's Afro-Brazilian dance classes at the University of Washington Experimental College.

In 1997, Jeff spent six months in Brazil and studied with a variety of percussionists including Edmilson Costa Teixeira, Gilo do Pandeiro, and Mestres Memeu and Lazaro from Olodum. In 1998 Jeff returned to Brazil and had the opportunity to play and perform with the Jovino Santos Neto group which included drummer Marcio Bahia, bassist Arismar do Espirito Santo, and saxophonist Hans Teuber.

Currently Jeff continues to perform with a variety of groups in the Seattle area including the Jovino Santos Neto quinteto; Cuban jazz groups Rumba Abierta, and Tumbao led by pianist Julio Jauregui; and Cuban dance band Mango Son, led by Roberto Sanchez. He is the drummer at First AME church, and also plays for pianist Kent Stevenson, and gospel singer Patrinell Wright.

Jeff continues to teach percussion to people of all ages both privately and in schools and universities. He is currently the recipient of a King County Arts grant for a recording project entitled 'Drums and Voices - Contemporary Spirituals' which is a collaborative effort with gospel singer Patrinell Wright.

More about Cole Schuster:

Nominated for a 2017 Golden Ear Award as an emerging artist, Cole is recognized as one of the first call guitarists on Seattle's very healthy music scene.

A versatile guitar player with virtuosic technique, Cole has shared the stage with jazz greats including Wycliffe Gordon, the Clayton Brothers, and Jeff Hamilton. Cole is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music, and also co-leads the 200 Trio.
